Social media research: signals for your customer conversation
Public company and specialist posts can reveal which topics a target customer discusses, which positions it publishes and what changes over time. Social media research connects these clues with your offer and conversation objective. This creates informed reasons to approach a customer and concrete questions for exploring whether your offer could be relevant.

Start with the source, date and conversation objective
Suitable material includes permitted public company posts, specialist publications and content you provide that may be used for the assignment. Include the original address, publication date and surrounding context where possible. A shared extract may omit important qualifications; the original statement helps establish its meaning.
Add the target company, your own offer and the reason for the conversation. This connection determines whether a publication matters to your preparation. An older position can provide useful background, while a recent announcement may raise a new question.
Turn a published signal into a testable assumption
- Original statement: What was actually published, by whom and in what capacity?
- Time reference: When was the post published, and which period does it concern?
- Business context: How does it connect to your offer or conversation objective?
- Hypothesis: Which possible requirement follows, and what might challenge it?
- Next question: What information would confirm or contradict the assumption?
Publicly expressed positions remain tied to their context. Personal motives, specific budgets and purchasing intentions are not inferred from them.
Prepare a useful opening question
Consider an editorial example. A company announces closer cooperation between its service teams. For a knowledge solutions provider, this could prompt a question: which information will need to be more readily available across those teams? Whether a new system is needed remains open. This preparation supports focused follow-up questions and helps identify premature assumptions about an offer.
