GLOSSARY

Reasoning

In AI, reasoning means working through a task using connected intermediate steps, for example when planning or comparing options. Additional processing can help with demanding tasks. It does not establish logical correctness or the truth of the starting assumptions.

Compare negotiating options

A customer requests a discount while timing and scope remain open. Structured analysis could examine different combinations: what reciprocal commitment is possible, which promise requires approval, and what would a longer agreement change? The useful output is a set of assessable options and their prerequisites.

A detailed explanation can also suggest certainty while relying on a mistaken assumption. Professional review must therefore examine the information and conclusions that support the decision. Understandable explanations are useful, but they do not independently prove that the result is correct.

Justify the additional effort

Compare whether more extensive processing identifies relevant alternatives or risks more reliably than a simpler approach. Include cases assessed by competent reviewers and the cost of their oversight. A baseline prevents longer answers from automatically counting as improvement. The available token budget should suit the task; allocating it is a resource decision, not a guarantee of quality.
